New CarPlay in iOS 10.3

10.3: Music improvements and new app shortcuts [Video]

iOS 10.3 only has a couple major user-facing features, but it has one very welcome addition for CarPlay users.

You can easily go to Just navigate Settings → General → CarPlay → connect with bluetooth or USB [Your Car] under My Cars, then tap the subtract or add button on the app icons you want to remove or add. CarPlay still requires Phone, Music, Maps, Messages, Now Playing, and Car apps.

In CarPlay on iOS 10.3, Apple has moved the clock and wireless status indicators from the center of their side of the display to the bottom corner of that side. This leaves room for three car app icons to appear on that side as well, but in the top corner. The top icon will be your current app, while below that will reside your two most recent apps. Just tap the icons to jump between the apps.

CarPlay Music:

All you music. Beautifully arranged.

Access all your content from iTunes, your Apple Music membership and additional audio apps using your car’s built-in controls. Search by artist, album or song. See what’s playing and what’s up next. Or just tell Siri to “Play my favourite Kanye track”. You can even access For You and Browse from Apple Music — with music handpicked by experts — on your display.

CarPlay Map:

Maps will always be included (unless CarPlay opens up to third-party navigation apps. Music, Podcasts, Audiobooks, and third-party audio apps like Overcast and Spotify will take over the second spot depending on what was used most recently. Phone and Messages will use the third spot and potentially VoIP apps like Skype and Facebook Messenger in the future when updated.

CarPlay Message:

Reading and writing is now listening and dictating.

Siri can read, reply and send text messages for you, so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving. Just say “Siri, tell Deepti I’ll be there in 20 minutes” and it’s done. CarPlay can also play audio messages through the car’s speakers.

Communication apps actually behave differently when accessed from the status bar too. For example, tapping the big Messages or Phone icon from the Home screen invokes Siri first, but tapping either icon from the status bar skips Siri and jumps straight to the app’s user interface. OEM apps also take over this third slot when available and used, although our test units both lack examples to include.
